Cities Skylines 2

Great start:

Yet another fail from the Paradox lineup.

Certainly looks like it. It could be the typical Paradox early review bomb so I'll give it a few days but I expect this game to be on sale in the next 1-2 months at a decent discount to get people on the DLC train. Sad really because CO, the devs are probably the best developers under Paradox that I still had some faith in. Despite some of their DLC failures in the past two years.

I think they're getting increasingly out of touch with what people want from their games.

Also getting blatantly greedier.

Okay. Figured it out.

Resolution was set to blank for some reason. I set it for 1440P 144hz, v-sync back on and back to high setting. But disabled: Depth of Field, Volumetrics, and Global Illumination in graphic options

60-100FPS on a 3080.

Granted I did not start building, I did lay down a few roads which I noticed stuttering. It was nearly maxing out the VRAM on the 3080 10GB.

I'll actually play later and see how this goes.

An hour into the game. It's not that bad. Yes, it needs work but on my setup, it doesn't seem to be awful.

But if you disabled vsync, Depth of Field, Volumetrics, Bloom, and Global Illumination in graphic options it helps massively as I mentioned above, for it to not look like complete ass, you manually set it to TAA in the advanced options. Much better than FXAA or both SMAA. TAA is not shown in normal graphic settings, go in advanced tab.

Currently got a town of 700+ people. 60+ FPS, currently it's nice and smooth. (I'm still on my RTX 3080 10GB, until tomorrow)

Gameplay wise, I'm an hour into it and I have not run into anything I don't like yet, it has lots of little neat features that so far works well.

Night time get pretty dark. traffic is nowhere near as bad, the AI actually uses all freaking lanes!!! However, it is still a little stupid, especially when parking and pedestrians crossing the street.
You can change stop lights to stop signs, The road tool needs slight work but overall much better than CS1.
The pipes and powerline's with the road is awesome, "info views" is a nice upgrade over CS1
You can turn off the annoying chirper in the options (thank god).
You can upgrade buildings instead of replacing it.

Honestly if the devs can fix the performance issues, this would be a great game. For those that are waiting, I agree. Wait for a few updates and see if they can fix this. if you have any specific questions, lmk and ill do my best to answer them.

I've said it before (many years ago actually). SimCity 4 with updated graphics and some gameplay updates is all you really need. Then we got CS5 instead.

I haven't play CS4 in years. Maybe I should.
I keep meaning to....but the modding lol.

Best time I had was years ago, me and my brother played a coop region using a file syncing program to share the save file.

Can you see how this 100k population city runs for you on your current system? Curious. Thanks.

Also what do you have for General\Performance Preference ?

If you are looking at the middle of the map, 25-30ish FPS. Away from the big buildings, you gain the FPS back to about 40-50ish, away from anything 80+.

I will say that save just showed me a very annoying flaw that I have not yet seen. Pedestrian are the leading cause of traffic jams in that save. Nothing you can really do about it either. They move so slow on crosswalks and the cars just sit there in the middle of the road waiting for a break, which doesn't really happen when you have a lot of people.

Thanks for the map, it would be a great one to test with the 4090 when it comes in.

Balanced. I changed nothing else in video/graphic options.

I made the graphics suggestions they they recommended on their Steam home page and it ran fine. I have a middling city that I've spent about 2 hours on and it runs pretty good with my 7900X and 3070TI. There were moments it chugged it bit when my city was hit by a tornado but it ran fine otherwise.

RTX 4090 update. Good god that card is a beast. No setting changes, the exact same settings were used from the 3080.

Anyway. The map that ng4ever suggested that I try is now a average of 60FPS in smack in the middle of the city, away from the big buildings 70-80FPS, and away from everything, 100-120FPS. I did get dips into the 40's when zooming in the city but overall much better.

Realistically, No one should need a $1700+ 4090 to play this at 1440p, that's insane.

What about vram usage?

Is this game going to be like Hogwarts where it runs out of vram before gpu processing power...

Start off with 8GB right out of the gate, peaks around 9.8GB I haven't seen it get much higher.

Unrelated, I have found some annoying bugs.

Solar power plants do not use their batteries at night, putting the whole city without power (unless you have backup power plants)

Specialised industry main building disappears after setting up zone.

Water, sewage and power lines are a bitch to connect underground to their buildings, they don't 'snap' to the closest line. You have to be direct for some reason, even with snapping tool enabled.

AutoSave Count: The option says number of unique saves (set to 3). If you have 2 cities going, it will wipe your other autosave from the last city. Found that out the hard way. :(

Under "Road Services" The no turn left or right option does not seem to fully work.

Non bug annoyances.

No way to change stop signs or traffic lights with yield signs, or tell which roads at the intersections should get stop signs.

Schools are still too small. 1500 max cap for elementary school so you need 4 schools in 8 blocks for big cities

Still no way to control traffic lights. It would be nice to have a dedicated left turn light and to control when pedestrians can cross roads. I hope TMPE (Traffic Manager: President Edition from CS1) comes out on this game.

Patch was released to further improve performance.

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/patch-notes-for-1-0-11f1-hotfix.1604140/

This patch includes the following improvements and fixes:
  • Changed LOD to be independent of rendering resolution to get more consistent performance with high resolutions
  • Minor optimization with fog
  • Depth of field optimizations and tweaks
  • Global illumination tweaks
  • Optimized stutters when buildings spawn/level up
  • Optimized various stutters across all systems
  • Fixed crash after upgrading wind turbine
  • Fixed crash when car crashes into still hidden car with trailer
  • Fixed crash with mesh loading (that happens with low settings mostly)

Hmm, so more and more bugs piling up. Not just performance issues. Typical rushed game out for the holiday/fiscal season. The stuff coming out about the Cims being modeled with a bunch of polygons sucking up gpu and cpu power are interesting. Looks like they farmed out that part of the game and when they got it back realized it was not done well.

Just installed as its free on gamepass.

Yah, default settings on my 13600k and 7900 XTX pushed the GPU to 100%

Disabling the settings as others have posted helps, but still, what a fucking mess.

Probably trying to see how they can make an optimized patch a paid DLC.

Played it for about 5 hours.

Its really not great. Runs like dogshit, doesn't even look that good.

And there is so much just not there....Unique tourist buildings is like....3
It feels like much less content than even the original shipped with.

This is a game that is holding back a HUGE amount of content for DLC. You can feel it. It feels like a demo, and that, in classic Paradox, means DLC as far as the eye can see.

I knew they would do this and I'm still mad.

Quick uninstall for me. I'll revisit in a few years when it has 30 DLC packs on a summer sale.

Why uninstall? You already paid for it and 5 hours is beyond refundable, so what good is a summer sale going to do you? Is it really THAT bad?
Free on gamepass.

I think you missed my point. You can tell that the game is holding back a huge amount of content. It feels like a demo, incomplete.

Paradox goes hard with DLC. Cities skyline has a massive amount of DLC.

My comment about a summer sale is directed towards the inevitable DLC.

While I like that companies like to add content, there is a difference between adding new content, and holding back content on release.

Is it that bad? No, but again, it feels like a demo. If I had paid the $90 asking price for this, I'd be pissed because it's less than the original on its release.

Unique buildings are a big deal. They allow you to add character and features with surgical precision. This game has almost none.

Right now I would say there is no reason to get skylines 2 over the original.

Ok, I understand now :). Yeah, sounds like they held back a lot of basic stuff to sell as "DLC" later :(.

Played a little bit to see how it was. Was getting 25-50 fps depending on zoom. This is at 1440p and the default settings on first run. Looks ok imo for a city sim. There are some LoD issues with buildings and cars, not sure if a graphical setting issue or something else.

For gameplay, UI looks improved ( devs should have this easy, just look at the most popular UI mods for the first game...). Good amount of information about your city from what I saw. Playing without having everything unlocked so going through the progression system with my first city. I like the change to power and water being road based and not having to lay pipes everywhere.

So far I would say I am enjoying it.

I dunno, 5800x, 128gb ddr4, and 4070, I dont have any issues playing it.... But I also dont watch the FPS because I dont care. Its smooth at max on 1440. Dunno the FPS.

Looks just like CS1... What is new in this one? I felt that the first game was hollow. I also hated the "level up" mechanics of the city. Like I can't build a school until my population is 10,000? Why not? Why can't I just build a school if I want to? Is there more to it this time around? Or is it just a fresh coat of paint on the existing game?

(CS1 was just paint on top of Cities in Motion 2 imho.)
