Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Like others have said the game is surprisingly smooth, especially with this much detail in an open world. At times the game has a dreamlike quality to it.

I can’t say yet if I’ll end up spending 50-100 hours on this, like I do on the Far Cry games (that’s over the course of two years usually) but maybe.

The haptic feedback on the Dualsense is terrific and adds genuine immersion.

In the upper plains area fps really tanks. I am getting typically 60-80 fps. Sometimes sub 60 fps as well but the view is stunning.

I’m interested in this but the combination of a $70 entry fee and the Ubisoft launcher is rough.

Do we know about how long the campaign is?

Entry fee? It's £12.99 for the ubi sub for a month. So just finish it in a month and it will only cost that.

How long to beat says 25 hours for campaign/extras. But only 1-2 people polled so far. Typically it the HLTB hours go up as more people play and record their findings. Just googling says around 25 hours. Seems a bit short for an Ubisoft game. I suppose the real question is how good are those 25-30 or so hours.

It’s 18% off on GMG.

Generally I prefer to own games, but I guess that’s an option.

Yeah I’d want at least 60 hours for that price tag, assuming there’s not much in the way of re-playability.

Definitely nice to see a title performing well on day one though.

I think I am around the 8-10 hour mark and it is definitely interesting. From a campaign standpoint I am halfway through the campaign.
Thus far, there were some boring missions at the beginning but now things are picking up. As with typical Ubisoft the game does have a ton of content to go through. Think of it as 20 hours main campaign and with sides it should easily be 30 hours. It is very similar to horizon zero dawn games in many respects (except POV since this is fp vs. 3p).

Overall I am giving it a solid 8.5/10 thus far. If you don't like Ubi formula then don't expect to like this one either but since I do like the Ubi formula, I am going to see this through to the end.

Ok so Specular Reflections is a massive performance hit, even on a 4090. Check this out, note the fps and the lack of visual difference (other than the shadows from the clouds/sun being different as the clouds move between frames):

This also translates (though to a lesser degree) when no water is around just vegetation as shiny/wet big leaves etc reflect light.

As a result, my personal optimised settings now, since many settings are literally broken or look better on medium the higher. DLSS Ultra Quality doesn't improve IQ vs just Quality, so stick to Quality.

And as if by no surprise it's an AMD system too:p - Funny how their own sponsored games seem to keep falling them foul in times like these.

Pcgamer review is BS. Reviewer had constant frequent crashes and blames the game even though it’s pretty obvious his system is unstable.
I visit the PCG website regularly because of their PC gaming newsfeed, which is update throughout the day, Monday to Friday - but their reviews have become atrocious.

I like that in this game, if you see a high up area and wonder "wonder if I can get up there" -The answer is always yes, you can. The verticality is great on so many levels (bwahaha!):D

Did a video at ultrawide:

Some cool Jungle ambient sound going on. Picked up the game on Epic for 46.00 had 2.50 coupon and 33% off. Plus I got 4.50 reward points for buying the game. I'm using the UBI launcher for the download.

This is a big download almost 80 gigs luckily UBI is one of the launchers where you can place the install anywhere you want without having to worry about deletion.

It's cheaper just to get a month or two of Ubi+ and play the game through that. It's not a super long game so I will be finishing it in a month tops for the price of £12.99

Using DLSS Performance is excellent at 4K+ resolutions as Digital Foundry have shown in recent times (it's nearly the same render res as DLSS Quality at 1440p) - Nevertheless, Performance DLSS has come a long way. Getting 75fps+ (90fps average, ~110fps peak) on a 4090 on the Ultra preset. It drops to 55fps on the Unobtanium preset though - Once a DLSS Frame Gen mod comes out, we should be seeing over 100fps at all times on a 4090 on the Unobtanium preset lol.

Nevertheless, Performance DLSS has come a long way.
FSR has well, went with DLSS less than quality has a quick way to have good FPS without tinkering with the graphic setting, 1440p monitor, was pleasantly surprised not seeing visible artifiact issues, specially in the natural outside world with less perfect small grids type assets.

FSR has come some way, not a long way, even FSR Quality still has temporal instability on distant textures, whereas DLSS Performance does not, and thus looks better/more stable. This has been demonstrated in the latest Digital Foundry AFoP video too.

you got your sharpness turned down? those look decent but soft to me.

Probably the forum's image resampler as it doesn't display them full size but instead scales them down.

i used "open image in new tab", its not that. are you using a picture mode? if its not soft on your end idk. i do seem to be "sensitive" to the upscaling/frame gen artifacts though, i can see it every time i try it, no matter which brands tech i use.

If you right click open in new tab, the screenshot is not 5160x2160 as the forum resamples them as mentioned. I just tested to make sure:

My screenshots were uploaded as 5160x2160. You can see them here:

It's DLDSR 5160x2160 being displayed on a 3440x1440 QD-OLED, looks fine on my end, but keep in mind that DLSS in this game does not present depth information for the whole scene so accurate sharpness is not possible without a mod that toggles depth information. FSR does give the depth information. Whether this is deliberate by the devs to "favour" FSR sharpness over DLSS because the game is AMD sponsored who knows. Either way, DLDSR mitigates that issue by downscaling the output onto a lower resolution display and thus resulting in a visually sharper image because of the pixel density rendered.

When I first played the game FSR 3 frame generation was broken for some of us Intel Arc users, it is working now for some odd reason.

They still look blurry compared to your DLSS Quality screenshots. DLSS Performance may have improved, but not by much.

I don't know what it is, maybe placebo, but I swear FSR feels smoother in this game compared to DLSS with the same exact settings.

I think FSR frame generation is supported and dlss frame generation is yet to be supported in this game, could be real ;)

New patch includes a number of fixes and improvements to shaders that increase performance.

https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/.../avatar-frontiers-of-pandora-title-update-102
Before this game launched I just assumed that the performance would be poor, but that over the course of a year or so Ubisoft would release multiple patches and eventually make the game smooth, which they’ve consistently done with most of their open world games.

I wasn’t expecting the game to run virtually flawlessly out of the gate like it is - nor was I expecting the game to look this good.

It’s great to see a patch this early, but to those of you who haven’t bought the game, this isn’t what you think it is - this ISN’T the first of a string of patches to fix a broken game.

I'm really hoping this translates to the next farcry game. The dunia engine is just ancient with that series, and i'm hoping it gets dropped for this moving forward.

I wandered around Pandora for my 1st two hours yesterday & it really is beautiful.

After 7 hours (1 was loading the game / 2 were benchmarking) I just got past the "tutorial" to the 2nd AVATAR title screen & 1st "campfire".

RE: the game & visuals...

This is what I hope to see if I ever do acid & X at the same time.

Wow, I have been playing this game almost exclusively and have about 3 missions left. However, it is absolutely stunning. This is what the game map looks like after 25 hours. Everything that looks like a cloud is explorable area lol.
Yes, it is repetitive af, but man the gameplay is top notch and I am just loving it. 8.5/10.

Everything I heard about this game so far suggests it's better than typical Far Cry in both graphical and gameplay department. I am moving it up to near the top of my very long backlog.

IMO - 100% buy if you like FC
- gameplay is very similar - especially if you liked FC PRIMAL

EPIC SALE (winter / x-mas) = 33% off w/ reusable coupon thru JAN 10
AVATAR ----- $70 - 33% = $46.90

I also got Crew Motorsport - already 50% off + 33% off the sale price
MOTORSPORT - $70 - 50% = $35 - 33% = $23.45

I really hate the EPIC store, but I like affordable games!

Can't wait to fire this up tomorrow I like jungle games anything Swap or Jungle related. Pus Swamp in Rift or the Jungles in Ultima Online. Biggest worry color gamma might be too much.
