Verizon phone upgrade question

If I am due for an upgrade and get say a blackberry curve or storm and receive the phone do I have to activate it? Does the data plan kick in immediately? Reason is I want to keep my old phone and maybe sell the new one is this possible? Without other hidden charges? Or do I have to pay retail price because it didn't activate....

You have to activate it, then sell it. If you sell it without activating it first, it will come up as an invalid ESN and the buyer will have a worthless phone on their hands. If you go back to your old phone, you can remove the data plan and go back to what you were paying before the upgrade.
