Verizon DSL and Router

I had two computers hooked up through a hub to a Verizon DSL modem for years. Both computers could dial up and connect simultaneously without issue. But then one day Verizon must've changed something, because now only one computer can connect. Once a single computer is connected, the other one fails to dial up.

I was recommended to use a router instead of a hub. I bought a cheap wired router from Microcenter (Linksys BEFSR41) and unfortunately it's refusing to work.

I never configured a router before, so maybe I'm doing something wrong and someone can steer me in the right direction. I followed the directions on Linksys's page for setting up a router with DSL: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=3687&donelr=1

Short version:

- Reset the router
- Turned off DSL modem
- Connected Ethernet cable from PC (Ethernet card) to router port 1
- Powered on router
- Opened router config (http://192.168.1.1)
- Chose PPPOE, entered Verizon login info, chose "Keep Alive"
- Hooked up internet cable to router
- Clicked "Connect" on Linksys Status page
- Says "Connected", network menu at the bottom right of the taskbar indicates internet connectivity
- Go to google.com
- Never loads! :(

Also tried MAC address cloning to no avail.

Anything I can do to diagnose this? I appreciate any help!

OS is Windows 7, modem is some uber old Westell.

#1 - make sure to set it to "Keep Alive" instead of "Connect on Demand"
#2 - after clicking Connect, go to the Status page. Does it list an IP address, Gateway, DNS?
#3 - do an ipconfig /all on your machine and verify DNS is 192.168.1.1

I'll check.

I've been googling around and it looks like I may have to set my modem to "Bridged Ethernet" mode? Only thing is that all of the instructions I find say to go to http://192.168.1.254 to access the modem configuration but I can't get to it.

Tried updating the firmware on my modem and the damn program doesn't even detect it.

So frustrating!

I took a screencap of ipconfig and the router's status page. Anything out of the ordinary here?

Maybe I just need a different/newer modem?

Try accessing it with the computer connected via ethernet cable directly to the modem, skip the router for now until you have that setting configured. Then add the router back in and try again

Yeah that's how I did try it. Still unable to access it. =/

What model # or give us a pic / description of that modem.

Bridging the modem is only really necessary if your DSL Provider
has it setup to do DHCP also (and they do, I haven't seen one
yet unless you're a biz class).

Basically I'm guessing both the modem and the router are doing DHCP
on you.

If you plug your PC direct to the modem, and you get a 192.x.x.x IP, then
thats your answer.

If you get a 169.x.x.x IP, then its not and you have further work.

How do I tell what the IP address of it is?

edit - If it's the IPv4 address, that one is 169.x.x.x

I turned off Windows Firewall and I was able to update the modem firmware. That did a whole lot of nothing though. I still can't connect to the internet once I throw the router in the mix.

I think I'm just gonna buy a used DSL gateway on ebay and give up with this router.

ehh... doubt that. If you had to create the PPPoE "dial-up" connections on the machines, and use that PPPoE connection to get connected, then the modem would already be in a "bridged" mode.

nope... that all looks normal.

ok, so for giggles try this.

ping google.com
then ping 72.14.213.106

do you get a reply from either one?

edit: Open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> select "Never Dial a Connection"
