I found a 32GB WD Raptor HDD in my storage the other day and figured I would try to use it in a Linux box for the garage. However, the OS, Ubuntu in this case, I have also tried Mint and a few others, they see that the hdd has space available to use, but when I get to the point of installing I can't create partitions or select partitions I created with GParted.

I can install Windows 7 on this drive and it also passes diagnostics etc... I know the drive itself is good physically.

I've searched for any issues with this drive and Linux but I haven't found anything about it.

Try allowing the installer to auto-partition.

I tried that, but the installer crashes and I have to power the machine off. I have tried with a different drive so the media and PC itself is good. I have a spare 250 GB that installed and auto partitioned just fine.

Are you trying for an "everything" install?

Just a standard install if that is what you mean, doing updates and installing 3rd party software.
