help with this picture please

what I want to do is take this picture and take each link in the spine visable and put a metal rod through it somehow and also use a filter to make the rods look like they were in the xray originally and also the two strips of whatever that is on the skull (take them off) that is all, pretty simple if u can show me tutorials on how to do that i'd be greatful.
