I currently have two dual socket lga 2011 boards running x4 e5-2670 intel chips. Now these systems have fairly weak single thread performance but that isn't a huge deal. My gripe with these systems is the amount of heat output and power usage. I am evaluating ryzen 2700x or threadripper systems to replace these systems.

What I am wondering is how bad is the realistic heat output from these AMD systems? The systems would be used as workstations most the time with lower utilization, however at times they would be pegged for hours on end during large compiles.

I was / am very much impressed at the energy efficiency of the 2700 at stock frequency and all 16 threads running for many hours compiling. I had done this to test the SMP bug that some gen1 CPUs exhibited. I never really heard the stock fan speed up during the test.
