I have a Deer 400watt psu that came with my case.

I was going to get it sleeved and when i brought it in to buy the sleeving, the tech told me that Deer is very low end and would not be worth the time to sleeve.

Any info would be cool

when I saw this I wondered if it was a rhetorical question

they are the absolute worse PSU out there
and have fried many a board

For a minute, I thought you were trying to make a very sarcastic joke.... and then I realized you were serious.

Deer is widely regarded as the lowest quality power supply brand in existance. They are known for catching on fire, exploding, taking out other components with them, etc.

in other words its a rather expensive paperweight at $10
unless you give it to your enemy as a present :p

Id recommend an Antec TruePower best bang for the buck
or for high quality but still real resonably priced a Fortron

Damn, i have never had a problem with it...but... good to know.

I need a psu then...anyone have any ideas?

i just got my new setup and i rather not install it until i get my new psu.

thanks for the quick replies..

Danny

What are you powering?
a complete list would be ideal

Adaptec 2940 uw
Plextor 40x uw (scsi)
Plextor burner (scsi)
Pioneer DVD rom (scsi)

msi 648 max with 2.4 p4
512mb 3200 ddr
9500 pro
sb live
2 sata hard drives
4 case fans

I'm in the process of an upgrade that will happen as sopon as a pick up a new psu
(already have the IS7 and cpu)

well this is a rough estimate
youd probably want to give it a shot yourself
http://takaman.jp/D/?english
and youd probably need to look up specific components or simply over estimate

AMPS
+3.3V 2.4A
+5V 18A
+12V 18A
which would work out to about a 350watt PSU more or less

review http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=761944

as I mentioned before
top choice would be an Antec TruePower 380Watt > 430Watt
$65 > $69 respectively at newegg (in the high high quality for a reasonable amount)
strangly a Fortron with a similar AMP distribution would be a 400watt and also $65 so...

Id really recommend the True Power Line over the SmartBlue

for starters instead of a 5% voltage regulation youd get a 3%
(Transient Response of: +5V,+12V and 3.3V outputs return to within 3% in less than 1ms for 20% load change. )
and dedicated rails, its actually a simple thing to mod the supply with a Blue LED and paint the cover ;)

(Ive been editing above, see my links ;) )

http://www.antec-inc.com/us/pro_p_truepw.html

"Dedicated output circuitry for each voltage output, overcomes the limitations of combined output of traditional design".

"Voltage Feedback to maintain accurate voltage to all components"
http://www.antec-inc.com/pdf/TruePower_inclusion.pdf

important features not included in the SmartBlue Line
or more accurately not to the same tolerances in the case of the transient response

I'll pick up the true antec 430.

I have a quick Q while i got ya.

Is 50$ worth having someone sleeve this PSU if one has no tools (yet) to do it?

Danny

well to simply sleeve it youd only need the material; and like $20 in pin removal tools
one for the ATX power connector and another for the Molex 4pin connectors

yeh it might be worth it
but then you wouldnt have the tools to do the next one
or change your mind on the sleeving material or heatshrink
(and those are pretty cheap)

I just picked up everything to do 4 PSUs, but that includes the pins and crimp tool to shorten the cables (Rackmount installations dont need 20" of cable when the ATX Connector is only 3" away :p )
