I currently have access to both cards but can't figure out which one to use.

Generally speaking, is it better to use a higher last-gen card or current mid-range card?

They both perform about the same but the 5770 supports DX11, draws less power, runs cooler and quieter.

4870 is a little bit faster. 5770 is better in all other ways.

If all you care about is FPS on DX9/10 games then go with the 4870.

Gotta agree with BababooeyHTJ...the lower power and temp of the 5770 are worth giving up the few extra FPS you'd get out of the 4870.

The FPS difference wouldn't be all that significant...but the lower power and temp definitely would be.

Far as I can see its like US$50 to go from those cards to a HD6850, save or steal the difference!

They're basically even. Depending on the game, the 4870 might be a HAIR faster at the expense of your ears, extra heat dump, and only DX9.

assuming they are both 1gb cards, go with the 4870 if you want AA on or higher resolutions, and go with the 5770 if you don't.

The 5570 has the power of the 4890 with the memory bandwidth of an overclocked 4850 and the feature set of the 5850. The lack of memory bandwidth kills the card in higher settings.

If I had to choose I'd still take the 5770 though.

I have an Asus HD4870 and it runs very quiet and cool. 55c on idle and about 68c on full load. I over clocked to about HD4890 speeds. Very good card overall.
