Let me say right off the bat that I don't know what I'm doing. I've never used Ubuntu before, but when I had no luck with fixing a laptop using my Windows restore disc, I thought this would be the perfect time to learn.

So I'm running a portable installation of Ubuntu with 300MB of persistent space. I downloaded and installed Clamtk to do a virus scan on the afflicted computer. When I start it, it says 'None found' next to 'Definitions.' I set the policy to Single User and click on 'Check for updates.' Both boxes are checked (definitions and GUI). The little progress bar goes for a while, then it says done.

But when I go back to the main window, or close and restart, it still says I have no definitions. I'm not seeing an 'install updates' button, and according to the Clamtk website, my definitions should install automatically. What am I doing wrong?
