Im now a freshman at PSU and I sold my desktop before heading up here and bought a macbook and a 360 and a nice tv. I like my macbook and 360 a lot, I just really miss PC gaming in general. Ive been doing research and I came up with kind of a partial build. I am a poor college student and I only have around a 1000 dollars to spend on everything. The 1000 dollars will need to include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headphones.

I was thinking:

Hardware:
Intel e4400
-Tuniq Tower (I want to overclock)
Gigabyte DS3R
2GB of Ram
8800 GTS 320
Seagate 320 HDD
Xclio GoodPower 500 watts

Others:
Case (Im looking for something that has a lot of bang for the buck)
Acer 22 inch monitor (Ive heard these are very nice, but the resolution is 1680 by 1050 and I dont know if the 320 mb card is enough. I dont mind getting a smaller monitor with less resolution as I dont have much room in my dorm anyway. Know of any good value 20.1 inch monitors?)
Keyboard and Mouse, whats a good bang for the buck combo here?
Headphones - I think I am going with Seins HD555 but Im open for reccomendations.

To save money on the board, go with the DS3L if you do0n't need RAID. If you don't need legacy ports, the Abit IP35-E is even cheaper and just as good:
$100 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35
$89 - ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ($20 MIR)

For a cheap but good case, I'd suggest this CM Elite, since it has 2 120mm fan opennings (1 fan supplied):
$35 - Cooler Master RC-330-KKN1-GP ELITE 330 ($10MIR)

SVC is usually cheaper than newegg for cases, but shipping charge depends on zipcode, so go with whoever is cheapest. You'll need an additional 120mm fan, so I suggest a Yate Loon. If you're getting the case from svc, just pickup one of their Yate Loon offerings. If not, get it from jab-tech:
$5 - YATE LOON 120mm Fan - D12SL-12C 1300RPM 44.5CFM 20.8dBA Sleeve
$3.50 - YATE LOON 120mm Fan - D12SL-12 1350RPM 47CFM 28dBA Sleeve

I don't think you need the Tuniq for a nice OC on the E4400. I think the Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B is all you need, and if you want to save more money, the CM TX:
$36 - Scythe SCNJ-1100P 120mm CPU HSF
$17 - Cooler Master RR-CCH-L9U1-GP HYPER TX 2 CPU HSF

The 320MB and 22" LCD will be fine if you don't plan on turning the detail settings too high. Keep in mind, the 8700GTS 512MB is due out in November and is rumored to be priced at $250 (its replacing the 8800GTS).

Sharky Extreme has a nice little guide where they take $1000 and built an Intel or AMD gaming system.

I'd stick to the OP's build instead.

if i were to go with an 8800 gts 320 now from say evga, how easy would it be to use the step up program in November to the 8700? Would I lose a lot of money?

you have 90days to do the stepup but you have to pay the difference in cost between the card you have and the card you stepup too. You dont have a choice in the card you stepup too as well. Not from the website at least.
