How much money will I have to spend to get noticeable increase in performance at 1920x1200?

I'm completely out of the loop on what's out their in the market. PCI-Express 2.0 16x the defacto standard now?

And what video card is considered mid or high range for both ATI and nVidia?

I'm in somewhat of the same boat, I'm running an 8800GT (although I kind of got sidegraded to an HD 4830 when I got a new computer).

From what I hear, we should just wait a couple months to see the new ATI and Nvidia cards before buying anything. The new ATI 5870 is supposed to be the bomb, but Nvidia apparently has something coming out by the end of the year that's going to be better?

The new ATI cards are supposed to be off embargo and selling by the 23rd, so you might as well wait for them to come out, if only because the rest of the ATI lineup will drop in price shortly thereafter, probably.

8800GT right now with a 1680x1050 display and I have yet to find a game (sans Crysis) that convinced me I need to upgrade. Getting a 28" 1920x1200 Hanns-G display in a few weeks so that will probably change. I'm going to wait till both AMD and Nvidia's new chips are on the table first though.

I guess I should mention that I don't have a choice but to buy a new card since I'm building a new system after my old one died. I'll wait to see what ATI has to offer, but any recommendations based on my situation? I do need more memory on the card now that I have a 24" LCD.

5870 if you can wait until the 22nd.

Otherwise a 4890 or GTX 275 shoudl fill up the pixels on your 24" monitor just fine.

$100 or more

yes, but 1.0 still works fine with the cards listed below

And what video card is considered mid or high range for both ATI and nVidia?

highest to midrange performance -
nvidia: gtx295 (like dual gtx275) - gtx285 - gtx280 - gtx275 - gtx260 - gts250 - 8800gt
ati: 4870x2 (like dual 4870) - 4890 - 4870 - 4850 - 4770 - 4830

midrange would probably still be gts250-8800gt/ 4850-4770-4830

your card (8800gts g92?) could still be considered midrange at this point, so a good single gpu upgrade (depending on the budget) may be a gtx260 or 4870 for the price. you would get a good 50-75% performance bump in many games.

otherwise you can wait a bit until ati releases dx11 parts very soon and nvidia awhile later.

ati's midrange 57xx series cards will probably be a nice upgrade for your card.

The sweet spot for 1920x1200 right now would be either a GTX275 or a 4890. The 4890 performs slightly better in general and is also often cheaper, so that's what I'd suggest. A GTX260 or 4870 1GB would also do the job, but you might run into a bit of lag in more intensive games.

it would be helpful if you actually listed all your specs. you have been here 7 years so you should know the basics by now. :p

I have been here for a long time I guess.

Not 100% sure of the rest of my build, but it might be the socket 1156 i7 @ 2.8~3.0Ghz, 6GB of RAM, and rest I have to figure out I guess.

The fan on my 8800 died the other day so (with barely any research) I went to best buy and randomly picked up a BFG 260gtx that was on sale (~$140). Wasn't expecting much but I actually got some pretty decent boosts, around maybe 40% I'd say on average. I don't play anything super demanding, though.
