Mix-n-Match Video Cards?

Hey Guys,

I am looking to add a third display to my setup, which will require an additional video card. I currently have a GTX 280. Do I have to get another GTX 280, or can I get the 295 for example. Or does it even really matter since I am more concerned with adding another display more than graphics power.

get a cheap nvidia card, eg the 8400 you can power multiple displays off of that
 
So I don't need to worry about running SLI? This will be my first more than dual monitor set up so im not sure what I need to do.

While I have you guys here...I mainly do motion graphics work and 3d animation using After Effects and Cinema 4D, etc...I don't do any gaming so would I benefit form an SLI setup? I also heard awhile ago you cant do 3 monitors in SLI..has that changed?
