I am selling my roommate my old PC setup after this break and was looking to purchase a video card to replace the 8600gt that is in it now for his bday/xmas. He will be playing L4D, TF2, and Warhammer: Online on a 20.1" monitor at 1680x1050.
The system is:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum-SLI
AMD 3800+X2 (OC'ed to 2.5GHz)
2gb Corsair XMS (4x512mb) (OC'ed)
OCZ 460w modstream PSU (26A on +12V)

I am planning on making a WTB post for this price range of card on the FS forum, but wanted to get an idea what I am looking for/ what my older PC can handle/ will not be bottlenecked too badly.

I was thinking something like a 8800gt, 8800gtx, hd4850, 3870, ect... but am really at a loss for what single card I should have my eye out for that price range...

I guess basically my question is: What do you think the nicest card I can get for under $85 used that will be compatible with the setup listed above?

find somone selling a used 9800gt,9600gt will be in that price range.

I have seen the HD4830 for $80 AR a few times. Its ~9800GT in performance. Maybe a tad faster.

Yep. As far as I know, both the 4670 and 4830 are faster then the 9800GT but I could be wrong on the 4670.

Find someone selling a video card on here for cheap

I am going to, I just want to get an idea of what I should be looking for in that price range/ if my PSU will be able to handle the card.

if you want another venue to find a card, dont underestimate craigslist...

I bought a 8800GT with dualorb cooler on it for $80...

tons of cards on there if u wait a day or two...no tax, no shipping, v little waiting :)

Performance wise:

9600GSO < HD4670 < 9600GT < 8800GT <= 9800GT <= HD4830

All cards can be purchased for under $100, but the last 3 usually require sales or used to get to the $80 range.

Cheap 768MB 9600GSO cards have GDDR2 memory, which is considerably slower than GDDR3. You'll get what you pay for. See ClearM4's post.
