Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has done a home made BBU for their areca card?

The thought of paying $150USD plus shipping for a battery seems crazy.

If so Id love to know how you did it, what you used and how it worked

Cheers

There is more to the BBU than just the battery... Have a look online at some of the images of an Areca BBU and you'll see...

Yeah, you're not going to be making one yourself. Reverse engineering the PCB isn't worth the time/effort. It's also a lot cheaper than some other brands (last I checked LSI still wanted close to $180 when the Areca ones were $120).

okay fair enough.

Will running a UPS be a suitable work around? (it will be cheaper than forking out for BBU)

Im really only concerned about being able to turn on the cache to get better performance.

Currently running 1260 in raid6 and the speeds are complete rubbish :(

UPS provides some protection, but not quite as much as the BBU. As long as your system doesn't lose power, you'll be fine. Before you buy either, turn on write caching briefly and see how much of a difference it actually makes for you.
