would this be better than the 384MB version...? this is $45 after MIR at teh 'egg and it also has 96 shaders, so wouldn't the extra memory give it the edge over the 384MB version...? this sounds like a great deal for a card that can play most games out there right now with decent specs...

I don't think the 512 MB versions are the same as the 384MB cards. Probably a typo.

The 384MB and 768MB versions of the 9600GSO were renamed versions of the 8800GS, with 800MHz DDR2 memory on a 192-bit bus and 96 stream processors. The 512MB and 1GB versions were based on a new core and had 900MHz GDDR3 memory on a 256-bit bus (that is a big upgrade) and 48 stream processors.

The ASUS 9600GSO 512MB you speak of, here, is listed as having a 700Mhz DDR3 memory on a 192-bit bus and 96 stream processors. The XFX 9600GSO 1GB cards available on newegg are 725Mhz DDR2 on a 128-bit bus with 96 stream processors and are much more expensive.

How do all these cards compare in actual performance? I can't even guess from the specs. Seems like vendors have done unusually customized versions of the 9600GSO, almost like they use it to dump their leftover chip stocks.

Suddenly quantum mechanics seems so overly simplistic.

The 9800 GT I sold on ebay for $56 bucks is way better. I can't believe that's the highest bid I got for that card.

Wow. That's cheap for a 9800GT. My 9600GSO was more than that!

I think the 384mb and 768mb versions had DDR3 and the 1gig versions used DDR2...my evga uses 384mb of DDR3.

I know. Tell me about it! I tried to sell it for $75 on the buy/sell forum and nobody bit. It went for $56 instead to someone who will probably resell it and make $20 more off it. LOL. Such cheap/stingy buyers on ebay sometimes and they missed out on a big bargain. Now I wish I hadn't sold it. Cos I had to RMA my 4890. :(

I'd bet my ass that those cards are listed incorrectly and are actually the 48sp cards.
