Formula Boinc 2018 Strategy

Fine for me; I’m follow a personal goal too. Just was wondering if overall we should not fall back too much.

In a marathon, if we fall behind, there is a good chance to pick up the pace in the latter half of the year if we all work together. The hard part is by how much that we can afford to fall behind (the dashboard helps). In the second half, we can guess which projects are popular (or other team's pet project) and which one is not.

Also, I don't really like projects with intermittent WUs. These should not be part of the "marathon". But then, such projects require different strategy.

Keep in mind that many people ramp down their DC during summer months. If anyone can run full bore during the summer...that would be the best time to make up lost ground.

I did move my 780 back to DC from mining. It just wasn't worth the "profit" mining.

I'll let BURP run a little longer and, once at 1M points for the league, I'll move to something else. Ideas?

I'm not sure. I know you like to hit a single project hard, but in my opinion, I think this early on the race we need to hit as many projects as we can to get a base to start from. Then it will become important for us to win as many sprints as we possibly can. The team that wins the most sprints will most likely win the league.

I'm currently running Universe and testing GPU apps on Gerasim. Still early to figure out which projects we should focus considering that some teams have pet projects that they will run till death do us part.

here a still beta version of a modified dashboard also include the historical overview of the overall team-points development; the image I posted the other day was EXCEL; this one is dynamic JavaScript

http://hard-dc.com/fbdashboard/index_v2.html

If you click on a team name on the left the corresponding line get colored; and when hover over a dot you see the points

Feedback as usual welcome

Current wish list:
1) remove day 1 as it just show from 0 to first daily points
2) create a scale with full month, then weeks within the current month and last week broken down by days to get an overall gray on the team performances.

3) Do we need colored lines for teams (similar to the EXCEL) ; I find it a bit unclear as the colors are not easy to sperate; this way with click a team and get it highlighted seems easier.
4) show the two or four surrounding teams of a selected team also on color to easier see touch/cross points

Updates with wish 1 and 2 impelemted

PrimeGrid's Tour de Primes has been announced. It goes the entire month of February. they have added a few more badges this year. I posted a thread in the open forum area for those interested. If anyone is badge hunting at primegrid, this would be the best strategic time to do so. There are no other challenges yet on the books for challenges in Feb. Not even FB. In the open thread, I added a very long app_config that should include just about every sub project. so, don't get intimidated by it. It would be best for G34 and slower rigs to use the multi-threading option on work units. Do your testing to find the sweet spot.

Though it pains me to do so, I am adding a couple cores to Climate prediction since the odds of them being a sprint are slim. Figured we better keep a few points on the board there. We are currently 21st. It has been a while since I've actually done anything serious for them. But, I still plan on hitting Asteroids in the near future. DC-Vault will most likely have a stress test for drugdiscovery@home soon. We are already in 1st place there, but doesn't hurt to build up a buffer.

fastgeek you taking a short break from hammering the projects? Seems you're only attached to WCG and maybe BURP (which might be out of work, haven't looked)

The enemy come closer ... still time I know

All: What do you guys think about automating this weekly statistics by user contribution? We can see how our members are spread out supporting various BOINC projects in a single webpage. Just a thought. Looking at ChristianVirtual .....

Currently, I'm doing milkyway and rosetta. I can start by helping to compile the list of all projects just like what TeamAnand is currently doing.

I think the "enemy" is trying to prove a point?

Looking at ChristianVirtual .....
Working on it ... I had some deadlocks to solve on the database while loading the amount of data. Also I’m working on a way to provide that data fresh from DB and not like now from static files. Or some middle way.

Is that ok to focus on active members only ? And those who where active for the last couple of weeks / month ? With changes in credits ...

Oh; and I’m working on a Admin/content management for help sites with controlled access.

The same app can then also be used to manage challenges etc.

I'm neutral on showing active members by month. No pressure. Just take your own sweet time since this is all volunteering. I'm sure all of us here are very much appreciative of your great work. Thank you very much.(y)

I think the "enemy" is trying to prove a point?

I agree but the point may be lost on me. They'll no doubt be thinking that, if it wasn't for the primegrid challenges they enter, they could beat us if they wanted to. To me, this is no different to the considerable resource [H] has focused on WCG.

The could have been, should have been, would have been approach doesn't win races.

While CV is working on user stats, I thought I would give a stab at generating user stats on a regular basis. It only takes a few clicks and the usual copy & paste to update the stats. Take a look at this as a temporary one till CV has a chance to finish the nice one for us. I can do this once or twice a week to give us how all of us are doing. This data is directly taken from free-dc stats page, just like what Team Anandtech is currently doing.

If no objection, I can make a weekly or biweekly posting of the user stats.

Nice list. Looks like I need to start finding more borgs....lol

I have something like this in mind:

http://hard-dc.com/HardOCPTeamPerformance.html

You can drag/drop the columns with project/user to change the view (unfortunately the other columns you could change/swap to; but makes not sense)
And I need a filter for project and names to reduce the list and tweak the CSS and the aggregates by grouping. (its a quite powerful component call SlickGrid); quite amazing

Anyway: open for suggestions;

I just see its not really working well on mobile iOS with drap/drop the column. But I think mainly you guys are on desktop and not having the mobile-fetish as I have ?

I'm mainly a desktop user. Larger screen but I think this is a very long list to fit the screen :D If our focus is on FB strategy and see how each of us are contributing towards FB goal, maybe add a filter to show those active contributors by days/weeks? As you have it now, I see those not active for more than a month still show up in the list and is "taking precious" screen real estate, lol. Having option to view past contributors is great but for FB, we certainly need active contributors. I'm not saying that those who have contributed in the past are not important to our team.

This is awesome! Keep it up.(y)

I agree...for challenges, we only need to see data of who is "participating". We can use that list to filter out our recruiting lists. However, if you are wanting to incorporate all of that data in another section of the site I would be fine with that.

My time recording start only end of December ; I think that’s a reason why some appear active while not. Let me see what I can twaek there.

I had a more generic boinc and FAH stats in mind, not only FB. But easy to also clone.

I like the idea of being able to filter and have a variety of stats to choose from. However, I think the challenge info will be the most used in the short and long term. I would recommend getting that ironed out so that by the time Pentathlon roles around, we can really make a serious presentation to people. Makes us look more organized and serious about stuff.

These EVGA boys i keep hearing about are gonna get lit up is what.

Their store is always out of stock and the alerts are always too late.

>:|

Also, some more good news. RFGuy_KCCO PM'd me the other day. He is still with us but just taking some time from the forums for real life stuff.

CV, nice filtering. We can use this for FB sprint and Pentathlon events and maybe wake up a few "sleepy" members, lol

Good to hear RFGuy is coming back. Miss him...

atp1916 , how are your numbers looking at each project you test? I'm curious also to whether all of your cards are on riser cables or are actually in appropriate slots. The reason being is that DC projects work different than mining. Mining is fine on a 1x slot as there is little data transfer back to the CPU. However, DC projects will use a lot more data transfer and eat up PCIE data lanes pretty quick. especially high end cards. So, you may have a serious loss of production if they are all on risers. Also, what CPU's are feeding these cards? If they are all low end CPU's with only a few cores, you may be starving the GPU's as well. In essence causing a virtual traffic jam during rush hour with a major car pile up in front of you...lol. Just some food for thought, but I am curious about your setup and how it fares.

Gilthanis Some of these projects have had no tasks, some have. I've loaded up my workstation (7 1070s) with projects to see if they spin up tasks willing and assign out work to all GPUs. None of the projects that have tasks appear to have exhoribitant task run times, which i've generally taken to mean as something isn't set up right.

Projects that seem to load/execute well across all GPUs:
@@Asteroids - ~480 points per task, average task time ~15m.
@Amicable - ~6838 points per task, average task time ~35s
@PrimeGid - ~ --- in progress --- ~ (Tons of specific apps to execute - not 100% which is best for fast Nvidia GPUs here) - research is spread out all over the place

Projects that seem to have issues loading/executing across all GPUs:
@@Enigma- ~438 points per task - {{{ Only wants to spin up 2 GPUs at at time? }}} ?
I've tried different app_configs and the <max_concurrent_tasks> setting, but i feel it is an issue with the project itself.

Projects that seem broke as hell:
@GPUGrid - ~ {{{ 0 tasks no matter what i do }}}

.. and going to load up some more projects here soon.

About the setup:

All of my cards are up on x1 risers, save 1 and 2 cards slotted into board per rig. Each rig is a 4U 8/9 card setup.

My CPUs are all Celeron G3930s and a Ryzen 1700X in my workstation. I have turned CPU usage/time usage in the preferences down to 1%/1% across all rigs, including the Ryzen box.

How would i know if there was a bottleneck caused by the PCIe x1 lane issue you describe?
(LMK if we should take this to a new thread - don't want to derail)

Here's a pic of one of my 4Us that is generally what the things look like inside - 7 up on risers, 2 in-board:

If you compare your cards production to another contributors, you can get a good idea if your runtimes are longer or on par. Give me your user name at a few of the projects and when I get time I will try and browse around. Also, be careful running your rigs at Moo! Wrapper when you decide to go there. You will want an app_config to tell Moo! to run only on one card per work unit. Otherwise it will try and use multiple cards per work unit and may not actually fully utilize them. For PrimeGrid, you will most likely find PPS Sieve to outscore the other GPU applications. However, definitely do some testing. I think GPUGrid has a limit of 8 supported GPU's. When I get back to a PC I will verify my notes. They run out of work often, so just stay connected and hope some trickle in. What OS are you using? If you take this discussion to the open forums, a lot more people can chime in as not many of our team actually have the keys to get in here. Many of them are a Hell of a lot smarter than I am when it comes to hardware limitations and explaining it.

Edit: GPUGrid has a limit of 8 GPU's. - https://hardforum.com/threads/all-inclusive-dc-project-list.1801908/#post-1040955850

I also see that you have your computers "hidden" at Amicable and probably other projects. You may have reasons for that, but it makes it hard for others like me to take a look at issues or help trouble shoot.

Above you posted Amicable at ~15s. Did you mean minutes? Because I'm seeing other 1070's from users in the 15-20 minutes range.

As far as Enigma goes, I want to say that I read somewhere randomly of others knowing of this issue, but I could be mistaken. It may have been related to another project or in a dream or something. I will try and scour the interwebs to find it. When you first start your BOINC Manager up, what are the first 50 or so lines in the Event Log?

If you decide to run Collatz, make sure to read up on this thread - https://hardforum.com/threads/collatz.1829190/#post-1041007995 They have additional configs that can really boost your performance/PPD of the cards. Pay attention to mmonnin's post on post number 64. Also, make sure you have installed the latest Visual Studio C++ runtimes for both x86 and x64.

Gilthanis Uname was be 'atp1916'. OS is Win10 64bit on all the machines.

For hiding the rigs, I wasn't wanting our "competitors" seeing that kind of hash before the sprints, but if it doesn't matter (in terms of opsec) i can certainly unhide them all!.

Roger on the moo! wrapper info.

For PrimeGrid, i definitely need to dig a bit deeper.

GPUGrid hasn't given work in a full week or two.

Collatz wasn't letting me sign up (full?)

How are you signing up for collatz? I ask because I think they require a code to get it setup. I am on the road today. So if I get time I will check.
