Tony, thank you for engaging in this forum. As something positive, perhaps you could use people in this thread next time as testers - if they are the most critical voices, they are going to give you the best feedback on your products.
As for me - I'm happy with my (second*) ST30SF, where the...
This sound sounds like the sound every Scythe Slip Stream 1200RPM 120mm Slim Case Fan I've owned has had. Scythe have sent replacements, but in the end I've given up trying to get one without it. Once in my case I don't notice the sound, so it's not bad.
I have a 500GB SSD in my SFF desktop, and as I'm not getting a NAS anytime soon need to add some extra storage, so I can copy all the files from my old computer over.
I've had many 2.5" drives fail on me over the years (but only one 3.5" drive) but the SFF case will only fit a 2.5" drive...
I'm a fan of the form factor, but noise concerns (and waiting for broadwell) has prevented me buying so far. Could you take the top off and mount a 120mm fan blowing down to keep it cooler?
Also, are the Gigabyte Brix and Zotac boxes NUCs too, or something else?
It's a bit chicken and egg - you need the demand to be visibly larger to tempt the volume manufacturers, and we need better products to increase the user base.
Best option is to write direct to the manufacturers asking for it - if enough of us do that any enlightened manufacturer is going to...
Yes, on the rear of the motherboard. I got the windowed version so I could remove the window and use it as a vent if needed (much larger than the built-in ones)
With an ATX PSU you're limited to a graphics card 170mm long.
You can add to your list the Raijintek Metis case, which I've been very impressed with. Better ventilation than the Jonsbo U2, but you'll need a SFX PSU to make it all fit.
Indeed :) As I had to RMA the first ST30SF I bought I'm playing it cautious with invalidating the warranty.
I know shortening, but what is sleeving?
I was considering using this case for my parents' new computer, and can't see them having any of these colours in their living room. I'd like a...
I bought the green windowed case after reading people’s comments about cooling, with the plan that I could take off the window, add a dust filter and mount a 120/140mm fan. Since I'm not using a tower cooler (having bought the base parts to use in a Lone Industries L2) I’ve got space...
Could you tell me the measurements between the window bolt-holes? I plan to fit a fan in place of the window, but calculate from a photo that the fixing holes are ~155mm apart.
Anyone seen the green one, and able to tell me what colour it actually is? It varies a lot in the photos e.g. http://club.coneco.net/user/25981/review/142688/image/6/
Blue, gold and silver are a bit garish, silver and black standard, and red/green could be nice or could be hideous depending on...
How long is long? I haven't got my head round the dimensions inside the M1 - what length GPU would stop before reaching the SFX PSU? Useful to know to work out where a particular length card will fall.
Agreed. My understanding is PSUs have two ratings, a passive and active cooling output, and to keep a PSU quiet you want to be closer to the passive end.
I see an output of 200-450W as more than adequate for most users, so downrating a PSU would not be an issue. Lower number for the marketing...
That's a fair point. I have been wondering with 2 fans the impact on flow (will they combine together, or fight each other?) and dead areas, particularly at the closed-off end of the PSU. Sadly I have no skills to simulate this!
How many current builds (assume nVidia Maxwell, Intel) need 500-600W, and how much is user expectation that a bigger power supply is better? I don't overclock, so I don't have a feel for how that changes power consumption.
Hi Stevo_, you're right it is like a TFX PSU, the main difference IMO being that Flex ATX units can be under 42mm thick, while TFX is specc'd at 63.5mm. Adding a thin fan on top brings them closer, but 1cm difference is important in SFF arrangements.
Let's hope so :) My system draws under 200W...
I am a quiet freak. I’m also keen on very small computers.
With every case I’ve sketched, it’s been the SFX PSU that’s increased the bulk the most - because it’s a shape that doesn’t complement the motherboard/graphics card. Which the Flex ATX design does...
Nice writeup! Have you tested removing the window (so there's an opening instead, which could be covered with dust-catching mesh)? It would very much change the airflow pattern, increasing noise somewhat but I'd be curious about temperatures.
Cheers!
Aaaah, thank you! Been keeping an eye on Scan, didn't think to look there.
Now to find some decent noise reviews... as that will be the deal breaker between it and a STRIX, however much I want a tiny case.
Did you get the Gigabyte one? If so, how's the fan noise? I haven't been able to get one yet in the UK, and with the rest of my setup being virtually silent this matters :)
That's a fair point, and I don't have any data for the GTX 980. What I have seen for the GTX 970 (source, source) is that the current cards on the market appear to draw more power - sometimes considerably more - than the quoted Nvidia reference design.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that...
Really - I was thinking the opposite, given the quoted TDP of ~145W, which no review shows it as being as low as. I was disappointed how much power they used.
Does it matter which I use?
I ask because for the Z97I ASUS currently provideIntel Graphics Accelerator Driver V10.18.10.3920 (updated 2014/10/14) while Intel's own website provides 15.36.7.64.3960 (10.18.10.3960)
Not sure why Intel has two numbers (one of which looks to be 5 versions...
Can someone help me out with the height of this card please? Asus quote 12.2cm but I've been bitten by manufacturer's measurements before and don't trust what they're measuring.
What is the height from the bottom of the PCB to the top of the heatpipe?
Thanks :)
I'm sorry to hear that. I've been holding off as it's not been clear yet exactly what I'd be buying - the colour, the finish, the size of the vent etc. I don't feel comfortable ordering until I know :)
I've done a cardboard mockup of the L2 - it's lying on its side as I have no way to hold the motherboard upright.
System: i5 4690/Asus Z97I-PLUS/Scythe Big Shuriken Rev 2b
Cooler is with supplied fan, running on a quiet fan profile. No graphics card, no other fans.
Running two threads...
Adapter efficiency does fall off significantly under 25% (down to 65% or so), so using the lowest rated adapter available has significant benefits if your computer idles a lot of the time.
