Maybe EVGA used some especially crappy capacitors for the 7600GT? I sent mine back to them for replacement last week with three burst capacitors, the first time I had that happen with a video card. Anyway, don't use it and don't bother fixing it yourself. EVGA will give you a new one for free.

Pretty absurd that this obsolete info was posted as news and then slashdotted. It hasn't been useful since the GF6 series. It's especially silly considering how few people are aware that the most recent ATI cards can in fact be modded completely successfully.

Were you trying to measure the voltage going directly to the CCFL bulbs? I think it's around 300V, AC. An inverter is required.

I had a similar problem with 2600XT; when I had two screens hooked up the secondary one would have strange black flickering or jumpiness across part of the screen. I couldn't find any info on the problem and manufacturer support was useless. I ended up returning it.

If you use horizontal span mode in the nvidia control panel instead of dualview, it will eliminate rendering problems like that, though it might get annoying when you try to maximize windows.

You can still do it with ATI cards, but nvidia are all locked now.

3850 1GB on Newegg I'm actually considering selling my 8800GTS and buying this thing instead, since it would probably be more useful to me. Though, even with the extra memory, the price is a bit excessive for a 3850.

There is a softmod for 3850/3870 on XP32 out now as well, so you could maybe get one of those instead of a 2900 series.

The softmod definitely works, I got better FPS in 3ds max viewport with softmod 2600XT than with the 8800GTS I have now.

Why not use crossfire with ATI cards which doesn't disable multi monitor like SLI does? Even though nvidia single GPUs are stronger than any ATI has, 4x 3870 is certainly better than any one nvidia part.

With >1gb files you're probably are being limited by the RAM. Going to XP64 and 8gb and then spending any extra money on replacing anything incompatible (which is likely nothing) is my recommendation. If you have enough RAM, the hard drive speed will barely matter except for initial loading...

Assuming you have a monitor with a non-working backlight that's otherwise OK (image faintly visible), the problem will be with the cold cathode fluourescent lights, the inverter that powers them, or both. If you don't have a spare of either, it will be tough to find out which it is and replacing...

It's probably the backlight inverter or the ccfl lights. You can check easily by plugging it in and then looking closely at the screen to see if you can faintly see the image. I've gotten a couple "dead" apple LCDs on ebay for a few dollars + shipping and fixed the backlight without much trouble.

You will need another nvidia card, (pci or pci-e 1x is fine, pci-e preferably), but you will be able to play games on all of your monitors (though you will need software supporting that).

It only changes the default fsb (BSEL mod). It doesn't change the multiplier and it runs as much hotter as it normally would if you increased the fsb by that much.

If you cut away the end of the 8x slot, you can use a 16x card in it with the end sticking out. You could also cut a notch in the contacts of the 16x card at the position of the end of the 8x slot (decide whether you'd rather cut the motherboard or the card).
