who makes a USB repeater/access point?

I work in a place with no cell reception or wifi. Yah. Weird eh? There's *one* networked PC. I don't have the freedom to change any of the existing setup as far as a wifi router etc. The only thing I could away with - maybe - is something I could shove in the USB port to act as an access...

    Line quality tests?

I'm having some connectivity issues that I'd like to blame on the ISP. :p They are gracious enough to ping the connection while I have them on the phone, and the test succeeds, or yields a result after a few attempts. "Seems to be working fine. Is there anything else I can do for you today...

    DD-WRT or ???

I'd like to have similar performance & reliability to a WRT54GL w/DD-WRT in a wired-only package, with VPN tunneling, and has at least 6 LAN ports on it. Does such a thing exist? Or is a WRT54GL with some tweaking and a 10/100 switch still the way to go?

    STP cable for wireless?

I moved a wireless router the other day (WRT54GL) in an effort to get better range. I just ran some patch cords and extension cords loosey-goosy to try it out. Boosted the sgnal to from 28 to 100mW in DD-WRT. Everything was fine. Then I added the 7db antenna upgrade also a couple days later...

    Intermittent power-on

What's the most common reason to get an intermittent power-on? Shutdown always goes without a hitch. Its that sometimes when I go to power it on, its like it goes into standby (fan & LEDs turn on, but no monitor signal or boot-up. If I switch the main power on the back of the PSU, that...

    MSI K8NGM2-FID - no audio?

Doesn't matter if its the included drivers, or latest download - nothing works. Drivers install, no complaints from device manager or anything. (Win 2k btw.) Simply no audio at all. All the other MSI drivers load and work fine... just the audio. Any ideas? EDIT: Problem...

    didn't expect this...

A friend of mine was having some computer problems. I visited to check it out, and decided I better take it away with me for more serious attention. It ran, but it was pretty slow. Also seemed like settings wouldn't stick, and software wouldn't load properly until the 2nd or 3rd try. Weird, huh...

    Raid/scsi card for P3 dually?

I didn't get any response in the disk storage section, maybe its more applicable here? I picked up my Supermicro 370DLE Coppermine dually this week. I have enough scsi drives (might get a few more) so I'd like to play around with RAID. I'm a little lost on the controllers. Would be nice to...

RAID - scsi for a change

I picked up my Supermicro 370DLE Coppermine dually today. I have enough scsi drives (might get a few more) so I'd like to play around with RAID. I'm a little lost on the controllers. Would be nice to utilize the 64-bit slots, and maybe have a small cache on it. Primarily looking at ebay &...

    PC died tonight

Well... my trusty Asus A7V w/750Mhz Athlon seems to have packed it in. Just a routine reboot and now it won't boot on anything - scsi, ide, floppy, nothing. Finishes POSTing and just sits. Kind of crappy as its my most modern PC, and is my http server. :( So on goes the MacGyver hat :D...

    486 router?

Some of the router distros claim they can be run on a 386/486 class machine, but how realistic is that? I have a 486DX2/80 with 32MB ram, adaptec 2840, 2gig scsi drive. Can such a machine handle a DHCP server, minimal firewall, some static routing? How much throughput kB/s can I expect...

    Keyboard & mouse shrunk?

So far its been a good week with the addition of a new scsi HD.... but now my peripherals seem to be shrinking  Woot!!! 20" NEC Accusync c/o my father-inlaw. He told me to take it because it was too big for his desk  Regardless, he will be compensated.

    VPN primer

I trying some site-to-site connectivity (both locations have broadband). What does VPN bring to this situation? Can the tedious management of NAT, portforwarding, and virtual server entries be reduced somewhat? (between sites) Ideally, I would like the 2 sites to appear as a single subnet...

    'Ruggedized' laptop on budget

Can anyone recommend a tougher-than-normal laptop? Dell seems to flaunt all theirs as being very tough, but a 'ruggedized' version - like a Panasonic Toughbook starts out around $2500CDN. (Toughbook is claimed to be very viewable outdoors - a solid perk IMO.) Now I see TigerDirect has...

    DVD changer?

I have a situation that could really benefit from multi DVD drive setup. If the vintage '4x4' type rom drives were still made - for DVD use - that would be excellent. Otherwise I could use a four to six disc DVD rom drives in thier own enclosure than can be treated like a NAS device. Any...

    RS232 serial gurus

I have a host system with a DB25 male serial port. The serial printer has a DB25 female port. It takes a standard DB25 female/male serial printer cable. Supposing I interrupt this simple setup with two DB9 terminal-server devices to create a serial tunnel over the Internet.... Now I need 2...

Anyone want to critique this choice? It'll basically be used as my contact manager. I can't do enough with my current cell phone, and I can't keep track of loose paper at all :o Everything else it can do will be a bonus. Its on for $799 CDN at The Source. Linky COMPAQ PRESARIO...

    installing nic on a mac

I got a LC-PDS ethernet card for my Performa 5260/120. No drivers came in the box. Do Macs need drivers? I can't quite get this thing going. My router 'sees' I have a valid cable connection, but the mac doesn't show up as having taken an IP address (like my PC does.) MacTCP is set for an...
