Looking at getting a temp processor to send off my 9900k for delid, anyone know if a G4920 or other style low end coffee lake would work in a EVGA Z390 FTW motherboard?
(it doesn't list anything lower than a i3 for compatibility but logically I expect they're not listed because they didn't test it, not that it 'wont' function.

Any guesses whether its likely or not to work?

I had the z370 micro from evga and i tried the cheaper celeron and it did not work. ended up having to return it and get an 8100 just to test stuff out at the time. Not sure if it will be the same but I was really surprised it did that.

Edit Actually it was the G4920 that i tried.

Did you have the latest bios installed when you tried that? The refresh Celerons are just as needing of a bios update as the refresh 9900k.

I'm assuming the OP will have the latest BIOS to support the 9900k. if you have a launch year BIOS (2017), then the cheapest chip it will run is the 8100

yeah that might have been my issue since the z370 board was older than the celeron. Since his is a newer revision with the z390 he may be okay.

Its a coffee lake cpu so likely bios compatibility, pm'ed you.

For what it's worth, I just flashed my EVGA z370 FTW board from 1.08 bios to 1.12 using a Celeron G4920. The 8100 and the celeron/pentium golds have the same CPUID but I wasn't sure it would work either.

I also made a post on the EVGA forums to let others know.
