Shed keeps getting broken into

I have a shed that is getting broken into twice a week. A few weeks ago, $24k worth of crop protection materials were stolen and ever since then, the perps are coming twice a week looking for another score. I want to get some cameras up because this is getting ridiculous.

Now for the challenges...

The shed is located LOS 650ft from any power, but to trench it in the path would be closer to 1000ft, so that isn't going to be very practical at this time.

So what are my options? Is there any sort of network bridge that is low power to use solar panels and batteries? At that point, I could transmit the signals to an nvr.

I know there are battery operated cameras that only switch on when they detect something, but it seems those just aren't very good...they are reactive and only if the battery isn't dead. So, I'm hoping for something better than that.

I love the [H]ard solutions presented so far. :D

But as far as cameras--game hunting cameras might work well for this since they would not be obvious. The other thing would be to have a security company set up a security system at the shed. $24k of equipment seems like an investment that needs an investment to secure it.

And of course, be sure to followup with insurance claims, police reports, contacting the local district attorney. Fight them by all means possible.

What state do you live in?

Because a shotgun and a sleeping bag sounds like those would go a long way in Texas if a trespasser is committing a felony on your property.
Washington...I think shotguns are still allowed for now.

The police are allowed to chase bad guys again, so there is that I guess. Prosecutors on the otherhand......

Last year we had a quad in the process of being stolen and called the sheriff. Caught them red handed. All he was allowed to do was charge them with trespassing.

Time to shoot them first and then say that 'they tripped' and then they can charge them with tresspassing. And if you have a nice shot at the knee that's the last time they'll be doing that...

crop protection products for apple and cherry production...only 70mi from a city with more than 5000 people.
Burns me up that these people are stealing from people that produce food. I say kill them on site and bury them for fertilizer...

Par for the course here...the government and press here vilifies crop producers. Some in the legislature call us slave drivers. Truth of the matter is we are getting close to be regulated out of business. The quad I mentioned earlier wasn't even our quad. It belonged to a manager that lives on site. The guys excuse when the deputy caught them was 'we thought it belonged to the company.'

Since Washington decriminalized hard drugs the theft has gotten really bad. We have a break in somewhere (multiple farms) about once a month. A year ago a local judge said they are overflowing with cases for theft.

Rant over

Meet my brothers, Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson....

do ya feel lucky ?

Well, do ya, PUNK ?

edit: I forgot to mention that every day, they graciously hand out several free, 1st class, one way tickets to the afterlife :)

Trail cam, also, don't forget to put a warning sign around that open hole that's covered with hay, wouldn't want anyone to step into it and fall into the mud in the bottom

Absolutely atrocious to see this in the USA. This is why illegals aren't the solution to labor problems. Either automate or find a way to make it work for everyone if human labor is involved. There will be a breaking point where there's vigilante justice and then it's the third world.

You wanted in my shed?
Good.
Poop bucket is over there, pee bucket over there. Eat the fertilizer for sustinance if you liked it that much the last time.
*padlock snaps*
*Mambo no. 5 starts playing*
I like this idea!!! 'I have no idea where that person is officer. Have a nice day.'

The battery operated camers can work fine. If you want to be notified while something is happening it's probably the way to go.

If it's something like Blink they can immediately give you an alert and real time feed on your phone. The cameras even have a speaker on them and you can talk through them on your phone. The batteries will last for months, and will also tell you the battery level on your phone alert you when they get low or are offline. You can also plug them in if you really want to.

You still have the issue of needing wifi way out there.

And you still have the issue of, will someone even care if they're being recorded?

A motion activated flood light might be more of a deterrant, maybe even with a siren. I just looked it up and they actually have battery operated blink camera floodlights.

I think the main issue is that they won't care because they won't be punished. Shoot on sight is the only answer and deterrent that will work as that's probably what is used where they came from and hence why they have moved on to 'better targets'.

What the heck is the point. Where is the resale market. Gotta be overseas, local won't work, Canada and Mex won't allow it across border. 25k in equipment is like 4k stolen.

OP what about the coop or NHC? Raise the issue and get group help

There's a lot of shady stuff now even if cross border isn't supposed to be allowed. Yes the value is less to the thieves, but it's untraceable cash.

Almost cheaper to move the shed or buy a new shed that can be closer? That's a lot of money lost.. ffs I can live on that for like 2yr

All this hardware talk makes me think..
Blink floodlight
Wired into a model rocket igniter
That's plugged into a shotgun shell where the primer was

What good are cameras going to be if the thief's will get hit with trespassing?
Frgmstr has the right idea.

A sign will only do so much, but if you follow through with the sign once, you may not have to do it again.

Really hate to hear about this happening to people in your shoes. Any way us non-farmer types can help out? Keep it from happening in our state?

A couple antipersonnel mines from the Soviet surplus store should sort this right out.

Illegals aren't the whole problem. A lot want to come here for a better life. I get that. Minimum wage is like $19....a day. Here it is 19.50/hr. But then some get here and good intentions get corrupted. We see it all the time. Some workers work too hard and get told by others to slow down. Then they learn if they get hurt on the job, then they get light duty work if it is available, if not, they still get paid for 40hrs whether or not they work or sit on their butt. Or another fun one that is new last year, if it is over 80F, you can say you're too hot and take a paid cool down rest break............for the remainder of the work day. Then they learn they can steal without repercussions.

The problem is the US and state public policy system has incentivized this sort of behavior in the interest of being just and fair to the worker.

Then there are people crossing into the US that are just plain ol' bad guys that I have no use for of no sympathy. Trafficking's people, drugs....true scum of the earth.

Make sure policy isn't always on the side of labor and the little guy or something. When there is a popular policy that sounds nice and good, think about how it may be twisted.

My theory is it is part of a sort of embezzlement ring. Joe is a person with purchasing authority and works for BigCo. Joe is "buying" crop protections for BigCo from Don over at CrookedLLC. Don then goes out and hits up someone's shed for product and then delivers it to BigCo. Joe then cuts a BigCo company check to CrookedLLC for crop protection products. What isn't sources from CrookedLLC they get from LegitCo. Joe and Don then cash the check made out to CrookedLLC and split it. Just a theory that seems to fit.

Except the shed is at the farm where we need the crop protection products.

interesting about them working months. I do have wifi about 650ft away at a farm house. Don't ask about relocating the shed...I can't. The trick really gets to be getting a camera signal linked back to that house. Then I am golden.

Sounds like an excuse to buy a Ruger Precision and a night vision scope to me, and enjoy the night under the stars on your roof. Could even use some Tannerite if you really want to make sure, and enjoy some fireworks to boot.

Really the only thing that comes to mind to me, would be something like a UPS that you have to ferry back and forth depending on how long it is able to discharge.

You could also see if the wifi is good enough that something like a ring camera, with solar power can get connectivity.

Want to go the camera route and connect back to another building wifi. You can take a look at a point to point setup like this. You'll still need a switch and wifi device in the shed for the camera to connect to an access point.

While they're out of stock from ui.com. Other supplier to have them.

also see the system in this video he sets up. More reasonably priced.

You don't need anything that expensive, you can do it with a pair of tplink outdoor bridges and they're about $75 each. The problem is you need power.

Solar panels and batteries to power the motion lights, cameras, and network gear maybe.

Fill empty $$$product$$$ containers with sand or water? Pissing off your thieves might lead to more aggressive reprisals though...

My sympathies!

No mention of claymore's?

Disappointed 😞
uOpt mentioned surplus Soviet antipersonnel mines which.......

I grew up in the Pervian jungle where *I suppose* it was fairly common to put a shotgun shell into a bit of pipe and rig up a trip wire/firing pin arrangement to blast whatever game was wandering by into bushmeat. My friend who grew up there with me told me of this practice, and how he was doing something similar in the US and somebody said "what in the HELL are you doing" and my friend was surprised to learn how illegal that was. Humph, regulations LOL

I wonder about having a phone set up with solar. Relatively low powered and has a camera. Directional Wi-Fi (with a cheap LPDA antenna) might work for receiving the feed.
